The Better Future We Leave Behind

Vision is never the destination. It is the beginning.

Over the past seven days we’ve talked about believing before seeing…

Knowing where you’re headed…

Not allowing the “how” to stop the “why”…

Understanding that goals only matter when they move us toward a meaningful vision…

Communicating that vision until everyone understands it…

Helping others discover a vision for themselves…

And ultimately recognizing that the greatest responsibility of leadership is creating a better future for the people entrusted to our care.

Perhaps that’s the greatest lesson of all.

Organizations don’t become extraordinary because they have strategic plans.

They become extraordinary because leaders help ordinary people believe extraordinary things are possible.

Long after people forget our presentations, our budgets, our quarterly results, and even our titles, they’ll remember one thing:

How we made them see themselves.

Did we leave them with greater confidence?

Greater purpose?

Greater hope?

A clearer vision for their future?

If we did, then our leadership mattered.

Helen Keller once wrote,

“The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision.”

I’d add one final thought.

The greatest leaders aren’t remembered because they had a vision.

They’re remembered because they helped countless others see one too.

Thank you for spending Vision Week with me.

I hope it challenged you to think differently about your own leadership—and more importantly—the future you’re helping create for the people who have trusted you to lead.

Because in the end…

Leadership isn’t measured by the position we hold.

It’s measured by the better future we leave behind.
