Adaptability Is a Choice

Adaptability Week has reminded us that effective leadership requires both conviction and flexibility.

We need the conviction to hold onto our values, integrity, purpose, and mission. At the same time, we need the flexibility to reconsider our assumptions, methods, processes, behaviors, and even our own thinking when circumstances change.

We saw how an approach that once produced success can become a limitation. We considered the responsibility to let experience change us rather than merely confirm what we already believe. We challenged traditions that have outlived their purpose, separated mission from method, recognized that different people require different approaches, and confronted the danger of becoming so experienced that we stop being learners.

The common thread is simple: adaptability begins with awareness, but it becomes leadership only when awareness produces action.

The world will continue to change whether we are ready or not. We cannot control every new circumstance, technology, challenge, or person who enters our path. We can control how we respond.

The strongest leaders are not those who abandon their principles whenever conditions shift. They are the ones who know what must never change—and are humble and courageous enough to change what should.

As you leave Adaptability Week, carry one question with you:

What does this situation require from me now?

Then be willing to act on the answer.
