Daily Reflection
August 11, 2026
“Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom.”
— Viktor E. Frankl

The Freedom to Choose

What if the greatest freedom you possess is one that no one can ever take away?

People can take our possessions. They can take our position. They can even take our physical freedom. But there is one freedom that remains beyond the reach of every circumstance and every person—the freedom to choose how we will respond.

It is in that choice that our character is revealed, our leadership is tested, and our future begins to take shape.

There’s an old proverb that says,

“I complained because I had no shoes until I met a man who had no feet.”

Perspective has a remarkable way of changing what we notice.

What once seemed overwhelming suddenly becomes manageable.

What once looked impossible begins to reveal possibilities.

Jessica Cox embodies that truth.

Born without arms, she could have spent her life focused on everything she couldn’t do.

Instead, she chose a different response.

She learned to eat with her feet.

She learned to write with her feet.

She learned to drive with her feet.

She earned a college degree.

She became a certified scuba diver.

She earned a black belt in Taekwondo.

Then she accomplished something many able-bodied people never will.

She became the first licensed pilot in the world to fly an airplane using only her feet.

Jessica couldn’t choose the circumstances she was born into.

She couldn’t change the body she had been given.

But she could choose how she would respond.

Every single day.

That choice changed everything.

Jessica Cox reminds us that extraordinary lives aren’t built on extraordinary circumstances.

They’re built on extraordinary responses.

Viktor Frankl discovered that same truth under the darkest imaginable circumstances.

As a prisoner in Nazi concentration camps, he watched people lose nearly everything.

Their homes.

Their possessions.

Their careers.

Their families.

Even their physical freedom.

Yet he discovered that one freedom always remained.

The freedom to choose his response.

Life will never ask our permission before sending adversity our way.

Every one of us will experience disappointment.

Failure.

Loss.

Unexpected change.

Circumstances we would never have chosen.

We don’t always get to choose what happens.

We always get to choose who we become because of it.

Throughout this week we’ve explored perspective from many different angles.

We’ve asked what if challenges are happening for us rather than to us.

We’ve learned to change the lens through which we view our circumstances.

We’ve discovered the importance of choosing our response instead of reacting emotionally.

We’ve learned to release regret, search for opportunity, and make the best of the circumstances we’ve been given.

We’ve discovered that every challenge brings with it the opportunity for growth.

We simply need the right perspective to recognize it.

Every lesson has led us here.

To one simple truth.

Our circumstances do not define us.

Our responses do.

Perspective isn’t pretending life is easy.

Perspective is believing that every challenge carries within it the opportunity for growth.

We simply need the courage—and the wisdom—to look for it.

Reflection Questions

Where am I allowing my circumstances to dictate my attitude?
What challenge in my life is inviting me to choose a different response?
If I focused on what I can control instead of what I can’t, what would I do differently today?

Challenge
Today, when life doesn’t unfold the way you hoped…
Pause.
Remember that there is always a space between what happens and what you do next.
Live in that space.
Choose intentionally.
Lead courageously.
Because we may not control what happens to us.
But we always control who we become because of it.
The choice is yours. Choose wisely.
