“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, youare a leader.”
— John Quincy Adams

Helping Others See Their Potential

Will the people you lead have a brighter future because they crossed your path?

Titles come and go. Goals are eventually forgotten. But the confidence we build, the opportunities we create, and the belief we instill in others can influence lives long after we’re gone.

Early in my life, like most people my age, I wanted to fit in.

My actions, mannerisms, and even the way I communicated reflected the people I spent time with. I wasn’t intentionally trying to become someone else—I simply wanted to be accepted.

One day, after class, one of my professors asked me to stay behind.

He looked at me and asked why someone as intelligent as I appeared to be would choose to communicate the way I had adopted.

At the time, it was difficult feedback to hear.

Looking back, however, I realized he wasn’t criticizing me.

He was challenging me.

More importantly, he was helping me see a future I had never envisioned for myself.

A future where I didn’t have to fit in.

A future where I was free to stand out.

He helped reshape my vision of what was possible.

That is one of the greatest responsibilities of leadership.

Leaders must paint a compelling picture of what the organization can become.

But equally important, they must help each member of the team envision a better future for themselves.

One of my favorite leadership sayings has always been:

The true test of leadership is what happens after the leader leaves.

Too many leaders feel the need to prove how indispensable they are.

They want to be the hero.

The white knight who rides in to solve every problem.

The best leaders take a very different approach.

They quietly develop other heroes.

They build confidence.

They create opportunities.

They challenge limiting beliefs.

They help people discover strengths they never realized they possessed.

A leader’s primary responsibility is not simply to deliver results.

It is to help people become the kind of individuals who are capable of delivering extraordinary results long after the leader is gone.

When we help people elevate their vision of themselves, we don’t just improve performance.

We change lives.

Who on your team needs someone to believe in them today?

Are you developing followers—or future leaders?

Will the people you lead have a brighter future because they crossed your path?

What limiting belief can you help someone overcome this week?

CHALLENGE
Choose one person on your team today.
Encourage them.
Challenge them.
Help them see a future they may not yet see for themselves.
Because the greatest legacy of leadership is not what we accomplish.
It is who we help others become.
