“In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.”
— Albert Einstein

Find Opportunity in Difficulty

What are you looking for when life doesn’t go according to plan?

Some people look for someone to blame. Others look for a way forward. Our perspective determines what we see. If we’re only looking for problems, we’ll usually find them. If we’re willing to look a little deeper, we may discover an opportunity that was there all along.

Few people have ever endured circumstances more difficult than Admiral James Stockdale.

While serving in Vietnam, his aircraft was shot down, and he spent more than seven years as a prisoner of war. During that time, he endured repeated torture, years of isolation, and conditions that most of us can scarcely imagine.

Yet he survived.

Not only physically…

But mentally.

Years later, author Jim Collins asked Stockdale how he endured such unimaginable hardship.

His answer was surprising.

He explained that the people who struggled the most were often the optimists.

They convinced themselves they would be home by Christmas.

When Christmas came and went, they shifted their hope to Easter.

Then Thanksgiving.

Then the following Christmas.

Each missed expectation brought another wave of disappointment.

Stockdale took a different approach.

He refused to deny the brutal reality of his circumstances.

At the same time, he never lost faith that he would ultimately overcome them.

He accepted reality…

While continuing to search for opportunities to lead, to grow, and to serve.

He couldn’t control where he was.

He couldn’t control how long he would remain there.

But he could control how he responded each day.

He focused on encouraging fellow prisoners, maintaining discipline, preserving hope, and refusing to surrender his character.

He looked for opportunities to lead—even inside a prison camp.

That’s perspective.

Perspective doesn’t ignore difficulty.

It searches for opportunity within it.

Every challenge brings with it the opportunity for growth. We simply need the right perspective to recognize it.

Albert Einstein understood this when he observed,

“In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.”

Most of us will never experience what James Stockdale endured.

But all of us will encounter setbacks we didn’t choose.

A difficult diagnosis.

A job loss.

A failed relationship.

A business challenge.

A disappointment we never saw coming.

Our first instinct is often to ask,

“Why did this happen?”

A better question might be,

“What opportunity still exists?”

Sometimes the opportunity is obvious.

Sometimes it’s hidden.

Sometimes the opportunity isn’t changing our circumstances at all.

It’s allowing our circumstances to change us.

Great leaders don’t spend their lives searching for easier roads.

They become the kind of people who can find purpose on difficult ones.

Reflection Questions

What challenge in my life am I focusing on instead of the opportunities it may contain?
Where have I been looking for someone to blame instead of a way forward?
How might this difficulty be developing strengths I couldn’t gain any other way?

Challenge
Today, when you encounter an obstacle, resist the temptation to ask,
“Why me?”
Instead, pause and ask,
“What opportunity might be hidden here?”
Because perspective doesn’t eliminate difficulty.
It helps us recognize that every challenge carries within it an opportunity for growth.
We simply have to choose to look for it.
