The Way We See Determines the Way We Lead

Perspective

Have you ever noticed that two people can experience the exact same event and walk away with completely different conclusions?

One person sees an obstacle.

The other sees an opportunity.

One sees failure.

The other sees a lesson.

One sees change as something to fear.

The other sees it as a chance to grow.

The circumstances haven’t changed.

Only the perspective has.

As leaders, we spend an enormous amount of time trying to change our circumstances. We work harder, solve problems, adjust strategies, and overcome obstacles. While those efforts are certainly important, I’ve discovered that some of the most significant breakthroughs in leadership don’t come from changing what’s happening around us.

They come from changing the way we choose to see what’s happening.

Perspective influences every decision we make. It shapes how we respond to conflict, how we interpret setbacks, how we view the people around us, and ultimately the type of leader we become. The same challenge that causes one leader to become discouraged can become the catalyst that helps another leader grow stronger.

Throughout my career, I’ve learned that some of my greatest leadership failures weren’t caused by a lack of effort or ability. They were caused by seeing a situation through a lens that was too narrow, too emotional, or too focused on myself. Looking back, I can identify countless moments where a different perspective would have led to a different decision—and often a better outcome.

The encouraging news is that perspective is not something we’re born with. It is something we develop.

This week, we’ll explore how great leaders intentionally broaden their perspective before they make decisions, seek to understand before they judge, look for opportunities within adversity, appreciate the viewpoints of others, and help the people they lead see possibilities they might otherwise miss.

Because one of the greatest gifts a leader can offer isn’t always a solution.

Sometimes it’s a new way of seeing the problem.

As we begin this journey together, I invite you to examine not only the challenges you’re facing but also the lens through which you’re viewing them.

You may discover that changing your perspective changes far more than your circumstances.

It may change your leadership.

And perhaps, even your life.
