Turn Connection Into Community

Does every difficult problem seem to find its way to your desk—even when you know there is talent throughout your team?

You want people to support one another and take the lead where they can. But do they know one another well enough to recognize who can help—and feel comfortable asking?

One of the greatest benefits of connection is that it changes how a team carries its challenges.

As people get to know one another, they discover more than names and responsibilities. They learn who brings a different perspective, who has experience they can draw on, and who can help them think through something unfamiliar.

When someone gets stuck, they have somewhere to turn. When they become overwhelmed, they know they don’t have to carry everything alone.

That includes the leader.

We spend so much time considering what our people need from us that we can overlook how much we need from them.

Developing connection gives us a better understanding of the strengths around us—and builds the trust that allows us to ask for help.

We can bring a challenge to the person best equipped to address it. We can learn from their experience and give them room to lead.

Someone with the relevant expertise steps forward. Others contribute what they know. The team gains access to more of its talent, and the leader gains support rather than another problem to solve alone.

That is where connection becomes community.

People begin taking responsibility for one another’s success. They offer help, seek advice, and recognize when someone else is better positioned to lead.

Leadership becomes something more people practice.

The person who guides the team through one challenge builds competence and confidence. Their teammates learn to trust their judgment. The next opportunity gives someone else a chance to step forward.

We are accomplishing the mission while developing more leaders.

That does not remove the formal leader’s accountability. It changes how we fulfill it. We provide direction, establish expectations, and help people use their strengths together. We create the conditions for leadership to grow throughout the team.

This week, we have explored knowing people’s aspirations, being present, listening to understand, supporting their goals, appreciating their contributions, and connecting beyond the task.

Those everyday actions build something we can draw on when the work becomes difficult: people who know one another, trust one another, and care enough to help.

The benefit reaches everyone. Team members gain support and opportunities to grow. Leaders gain perspective, shared problem solving, and the confidence to give others room to lead.

A connected team gives everyone someone to turn to—and more people a chance to lead.

Does your team know who to approach when they need help beyond their own expertise?
Where might you be carrying a challenge that someone else is better equipped to lead?
What would become possible if helping one another succeed became an everyday expectation?

This week, bring your team together around one real challenge. Ask who has relevant experience, who could use support, and who is ready to take the lead. Give that person the authority and support to move the work forward.
Then recognize both the result and the people who helped one another achieve it.
Working alongside people creates proximity. Understanding and caring about them creates connection.
When that care extends throughout the team, we build a community that strengthens its people —and develops its next leaders.
The mission moves forward. More leaders emerge. And everyone has a team behind them.
