Take the Next Right Step
Have you ever felt overwhelmed because everything needed your attention—and you didn’t know where to start?
When the demands keep piling up, it can feel as though you need to solve everything at once. Your mind jumps from one problem to another, and even deciding where to begin becomes another source of pressure.
One of the challenges of leading teams is contending with the myriad of items vying for your attention at any given time.
I often faced problems that appeared unsolvable. I could not see all the way to a happy ending, and I felt like a deer caught in the headlights.
I wanted to move forward, but I didn’t know where to begin.
It felt like trying to find my way out of a forest without a compass or a view of any landmarks. Every direction raised more questions, and the pressure to find the entire solution made it harder to take even the first step.
But when you cannot see the finish line in a race, you keep putting one foot in front of the other. You focus on reaching the next crossroad, then the next, until you finally reach your goal.
The same philosophy works for leaders.
We will never eliminate uncertainty. Sometimes we know where we need to end up without knowing every step that will get us there.
The key is being clear about the destination and why it matters. That clarity helps us sort through competing demands and identify the next right step.
That step might be gathering a missing piece of information, asking someone for help, or bringing the team together to agree on the most important problem to address.
It does not have to solve everything. It needs to move us toward the objective.
When we allow pressure to overwhelm us, we become stuck. We keep searching for certainty while the problems continue to pile up.
Taking a purposeful step gives us something new to work with. We learn, reassess, and choose the next step. The path may become clearer as we move.
Even small progress can reduce the worry and stress that come from feeling helpless.
As leaders, we can help our teams make that same shift. Make the objective clear. Explain why it matters. Help people focus their energy on what they can do next.
You don’t need to see the entire path to take the next right step.
Where has stress gotten you stuck today?
What outcome are you trying to achieve, and why does it matter?
What is the next right step you can take to become unstuck?
Choose one challenge that has been weighing on you. Clarify the objective, identify one purposeful action, and take it.
The choice is yours. Choose wisely.
